Dear Sisters,
We want to update you on what we know of the situation of our sisters in Haiti following the earthquake there last evening.
Josefa Corrada (PRH): Josefa is in Port au Prince and was at a meeting with other religious yesterday afternoon when the earthquake struck. We have just heard that they were able to get out of the building after the first quake and threw themselves on the ground for safety. Josefa was able to call her sister in Puerto Rico at that point. There has been no further communication, but we are most grateful that she is safe and with others.
Matilde Moreno (ESS) left Port au Prince yesterday (Tuesday) for a meeting in Mexico related to her ministry. Her brother called her cell phone when he heard the news of the earthquake and reached her as she changed planes in Panama. She had not yet heard about the earthquake. Matilde is staying at the community of Plateros in Mexico.
Judy Vollbrecht (USA) has been on sabbatical in the United States for the past several months.
Esperanza Calabuig (CHI) has been in Haiti for the past several months, supporting our community in Port au Prince. She returned to Chile at the end of December to prepare to begin her new ministry in Cuba on January 18th.
Let us pray for Josefa, and for all those who are affected by the earthquake and its after effects, for their safety and for their spirit. May the compassion of God be expressed through the support of many people as the people of Haiti once again set about rebuilding their lives.
We will be in touch as soon as we hear other news.
With love and prayer,
Kathy, Carmen Margarita, Nancy, Hiroko and Cath
