An article in the August 7 issue of the New Orleans Clarion Herald entitled "Haiti's Devastation Wrenches the Soul" describes the work of Sister Vollbrecht and others. An excerpt is below. You can also read the complete story in the Clarion Herald PDF archives.
Excerpt:
[Judy Vollbrecht, RSCJ] had lived in Haiti previously and had just spent three months training teachers there to handle trauma and calm students still experiencing trauma six months after the magnitude 7 earthquake hit the country...
Sister Judy thinks what’s most needed for recovery is rebuilding the schools and the farming industry. "It’s an agricultural country – until those people have some way to get back on their feet, nothing else will move forward," Sister Judy said. "They need schools and teachers in the schools. They need medical care. ... It is a miracle there hasn’t been a huge epidemic break out in the camps with people living so close together. ... The big thing is the government needs to get on the ball, get land and get housing up and let people live as human beings."
Sister Judy will return to Haiti Sept. 4 to teach English as a second language at a teacher's training college in Verrettes.
"It will give them something positive to do," she said.
