This June, Thensted Center underwent a huge transformation. A group of 36 high school students and 11 chaperons (professional contractors, firemen, painters etc.) worked for a week in record heat, rain and humidity to transform our Center.
Their charismatic leader, Harold Masback, "Skip", had left a successful law practice to become pastor of the Congregational Church in New Canaan, Connecticut, and now leads a group of teenagers in weekly prayer meetings and scripture study as well as service projects for the needy. The students are taught the skills needed for each project then, under supervision, do all of the work themselves. All the supplies, equipment tools, paint, plants, sand etc. are purchased, then donated to the Center.
Here at Thensted, under the direction of their chaperons, the students constructed a patio by the pool and planted bushes and flowers all around the building. They built a playground complete with swings, slides, monkey bars and a sand box. The 20-year old shed was repaired, painted and cleaned inside. Upstairs, the two bathrooms were painted, new toilets and showers were installed, and tile floors were laid. You should see the transformation!
Skip is teaching these kids the values of community, relationships, compassion, and sharing. We have been so inspired by their presence and generosity and feel that God is abundantly blessing our ministry here in Grand Coteau.
Come visit and see for yourselves that Thensted is better, safer - and much more beautiful.
Note: Thensted Center in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, has focused on human needs and brought people together in productive collaboration for over thirty-five years. The Center, named for Father Cornelius J. Thensted, SJ, was begun by Margaret Hoffman, RSCJ, and is now operated by two RSCJ, two local women, and numerous volunteers.
