Sprout Creek Farm,
an educational ministry of the Society of the Sacred Heart, U.S.
Province, was awarded the 2004 Business Excellence Award in the
agriculture business category by the Duchess County Economic
Development Corp. The farm is in LaGrange, New York, near Poughkeepsie.
Cornell Cooperative Extension's Shannon Kishell described the farm as
“an amazing resource where students can learn about the working of a
farm, taking care of animals and even what it is like to have a
business.”
Animals at the farm include thirty-two cows, thirty-six goats, forty
sheep, six pigs and 120 chickens. The farm produces award-winning
cheeses at its creamery, which it sells at the farm, at farmers'
markets and at stores.
Three RSCJ, Sisters Margo Morris, Georgie Blaeser and Jean Ford live at
the farm and, with a staff of fourteen full-time employees, oversee
summer educational programs for the Network of Sacred Heart Schools and
year-round programs for schools and community organizations in the area.
Sister Morris, the farm's executive director, conceived of the farm
while teaching at Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich,
Connecticut, as a way of promoting and teaching basic values and
providing young people with a more holistic world view than that
provided by a materialistic culture.
