Kathryn Sullivan with Pope John Paul II in 1980.

Kathryn Sullivan, rscj, a Catholic biblical scholar who became a major
figure in the field before women were accepted for graduate Scripture
study, will celebrate her 100th
birthday on May 17 at Kenwood Convent of the Sacred Heart, Albany, N.Y.
Sister Sullivan, alumna and former Research Professor of Sacred
Scripture at Manhattanville, earned a Ph.D. in history from the
University of Pennsylvania in 1939 then later worked with a priest,
Msgr. John E. Steinmueller, who agreed to train her as a biblical
scholar. Sister Sullivan went on to become the first female member of
the Catholic Biblical Association and vice-president of that
organization in 1958. (Due to her gender, she did not, as is normally
the case, proceed to the presidency.) She was a founding editorial
board member of Catholic Biblical Quarterly and of The Bible Today.
Numerous
honors have come her way, including the Edith Stein Medal for
Judeo-Christian Relations and the LaSalle Medal for Educational
Contribution. She taught at Manhattanville from 1938 to 1984, and
following her retirement, taught part time at St. Joseph Seminary,
Dunwoodie, N.Y.
