Kathleen
Sullivan, RSCJ, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Seattle
University and founder of a Summer Science SPLASH, an enrichment
program for middle school girls, received the 2003 Distinguished
Teaching Award from the Seattle University Alumni Association. The
award was presented in a ceremony May 22.
Sister Sullivan
created SPLASH in 1993 to bolster the confidence of girls who excel in
math and science. “Some girls gifted in math and science feel isolated
in their own schools,” she said.
Over the past 49 years,
Sister Sullivan has taught mathematics to every grade level, from first
grade through graduate school. She has taught at the university level
for 30 years, 16 of those at Seattle University. She holds a bachelor’s
degree in mathematics from Duchesne College, Omaha, a master’s degree
in computer science from the University of Iowa, and a doctoral degree
in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
The Alumni Board of Governors and Seattle University President Stephen Sundborg, SJ, chose Sister Sullivan for the 2003 award.
