RSCJ Associate Kristi Laughlin protests U.S. military action against Iraq

Sacred Heart Associate Kristi Laughlin joined a protest against U.S. military action against Iraq Nov. 17 and was quoted in a Washington Post article the following day. Laughlin, of San Francisco, accompanied Sr. Mary Pat White last summer on a trip to Afghanistan. See Spotlight Archive on this Web site.

 
Sister honored for Habitat work

Sister Marie-Louise Wolfington RSCJ of LaBelle, Fla., was honored in late November for her work to establish Habitat for Humanity in Hendry County, Florida. Millard Fuller, co-founder of Habitat for Humanity International, presented the award at a breakfast at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in LaBelle.

Rosary makes first land purchase in 115 years

Sister Teresa Teshima, RSCJ, president of St. Francis Xavier Mission for Japanese Catholics in San Francisco, was recently featured in an article by Catholic News Service. Sister Teshima, 81, has a 76-year history with the mission, which served as an oasis for her parents after they emigrated from Japan to the United States.

New Children's Book

dunn_illustration_thSister Jan Dunn has written a children’s book about the life of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne. It’s titled Under the Pear Tree (for a pear tree in St. Charles that gave Philippine so much pleasure). Illustrations are by students in the class of 2011 at Duchesne Academy in Houston, where Dunn is headmistress.

Sr. Bartunek Wins Top Award at Boston College

Sr. Jean M. Bartunek, rscj, professor at the Carroll School of Management at Boston College, has been awarded the Boston College Distinguished Research Award for 2002. The award, which consists of a $4,000 cash prize and a grant of $2000 for support of teaching and research, is given annually to recognize outstanding scholarly accomplishments of full-time faculty.

Society Seeks United Nations Role

Seeking a way to join other groups working internationally for justice and peace, the General Council of the Society of the Sacred Heart will apply in June to the United Nations for status as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). If accepted, the Society will join about 25 other Catholic religious orders and some 1,500 other organizations that hold NGO status at the United Nations.

RSCJ Corporate Stance Against the Death Penalty

Sr. Kathleen Hughes, Provincial, and the other four members of the U.S. Provincial Team have written Gov. George Ryan of Illinois to thank him for extending his freeze on the death penalty in his state. The provincial team is in the process of sending letters to more than 70 other U.S. and state officials to notify them of the U.S. Province’s corporate stance against capital punishment.

Sr. Claire Saizan Retires

saizan03_th Sister Claire Saizan, retiring after 64 years as a Sacred Heart educator, is asking for a minimum of fuss.  “No credit is due,” she said in a telephone interview from her home in Grand Coteau, La. “It’s been a privilege.” Sister Saizan, 92, was recognized after a Mass May 23 at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau commemorating the Feast of St. Madeline Sophie.

senbazuru_thEven without the gift of a metal cross, students at Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, N.J., are unlikely to ever forget September 11, 2001. But the cross, cut by rescue workers from an I-beam of the World Trade Center's North Tower, is a visceral reminder of both the terror that gripped the nation and its citizens' generous, often heroic, response.
