New Provincial Team to be installed August 14

kconan_thSister Kathleen Conan, RSCJ, will be installed as provincial of the U.S. Province in a team transition liturgy August 14 at the Shrine of St. Philippine Duchesne in St. Charles, Missouri. Installed with her will be the three members of her new provincial team, Sisters Paula Toner, Marina Hernandez and Anne Byrne.

In addition, judges in the national competition gave two awards and two honorable mentions to Heart magazine, published by the Society of the Sacred Heart, U.S. Province, since 2003.

Carolyn Osiek featured at conference

Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, was one of four featured speakers at the 2005 conference of Sacred Heart Communities in Collaboration, an organization of religious communities of men and women who share a common spirituality of dedication to the Sacred Heart. The conference was held in Waltham, Massachusetts, June 24-26. Sister Osiek is Charles Fischer Cathoilc Professor of New Testament at Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, and president of the Society of Biblical Literature.
 
Kathleen Sullivan, RSCJ, appointed Professor Emerita

0506_emerita_thKathleen Sullivan, RSCJ, was appointed Professor Emerita at Seattle University, where she has taught math in the School of Engineering for eighteen years. Sister Sullivan will continue teaching math at the school. She will also pursue a variety of out-of-the-classroom teaching experiences, including her annual summer “Splash” program for girls from schools in the Seattle area who are top achievers in science and math.

Mary Mardel, RSCJ, a longtime moderator of the Adult Children of Mary Sodality in San Francisco, recently conducted a survey of Adult Children of Mary groups presently active in the United States. Mary Blish, RSCJ, of New Orleans, has written an article giving a brief history of the sodality and the result of Sister Mardel’s survey.

sullivan_thKathryn Sullivan, rscj, a Catholic biblical scholar who became a major figure in the field before women were accepted for graduate Scripture study, will celebrate her 100th birthday on May 17 at Kenwood Convent of the Sacred Heart, Albany, N.Y. Sister Sullivan, alumna and former Research Professor of Sacred Scripture at Manhattanville, earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939 then later worked with a priest, Msgr. John E. Steinmueller, who agreed to train her as a biblical scholar.

The Religious of the Sacred Heart of the U.S. Province rejoice with the worldwide Catholic Church at the election of the 265th pope on April 19, 2005, the second day of voting by the College of Cardinals: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who has chosen the name Benedict XVI. Cardinal Ratzinger has long served the church as priest, bishop and cardinal and has generated controversy during his long tenure as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Barbara Bowe, RSCJ, professor at Chicago Theological Union, delivered a reflection in a Mass celebrated by Fr. Gil Ostdiek, OFM, and attended by Religious of the Sacred Heart from many parts of the United States.

Lisa Buscher to profess first vows this month

lisabuscher_th Lisa Buscher has completed her novitiate in the Society of the Sacred Heart and will profess her first vows at a ceremony in Chicago on March 28. Lisa, 36, is a native of Phoenix, Arizona. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Grand Canyon University, where she majored in religion, and a master’s degree in theology from Catholic Theological Union, Chicago.

'Finest Teacher' never let controversy 'take her off track': Sacred Heart Sr. Kathleen Hughes sat surrounded by men in a library at the Vatican. On the bookshelves were rows of binders marked with the brand name “Resisto,” which she noted with a raised eyebrow. How could they possibly make any progress discussing inclusive language in such a room? Especially when the representative from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith kept referring to “the angry, irritated and resentful women of the U.S.”? There he went again: “The angry, irritated and resentful women of the U.S. are trying to change the gender of God.”

Manhattanville Program builds confidence and media savvy

A new mentoring initiative pairs twelve Duchesne Scholars at Manhattanville University with the same number of young African-American and Hispanic women from the Coachman Family Center in White Plains, New York. The framework for the mentoring program, called “Ladies Room,” was designed by a student, Madeline Valencia, during an honors course called “Changing the World - One Step at a Time.”

New Provincial Named for U.S. Province

k_conan_thTerm begins in August 2005. Kathleen Conan rscj, has been named provincial of the United States Province, succeeding Kathleen Hughes rscj, who has served as provincial since 1999. Sister Conan, presently of Chicago, was appointed by the General Council of the Society of the Sacred Heart in Rome, based on extensive consultation with members of the U.S. Province.

Tsunami relief effort

Living Wages featured in national magazine

Living Wages, an educational program in Washington D.C. founded by Betsy Hartson rscj, and Robert Crittenden, was featured in the latest issue of St. Anthony Messenger in an article titled "D.C.'s Children: Poverty in Our Nation's Capital." Living Wages provides educational programs and services to adults seeking high school equivalency diplomas. Classes are offered in two inner-city areas: Washington Highlands and Anacostia.
