Janet
Rhodes, bookkeeper for the Society of the Sacred Heart, U.S. Province,
marked 25 years in the post on November 3 with a celebration at the
Society’s U.S. Province headquarters in St. Louis. The U.S. provincial
team and province staff members in St. Louis attended a luncheon in
Rhodes’ honor at the provincial house on her anniversary.

Eve Kavanagh, RSCJ, received the Woman of Spirit Award at an annual
event sponsored by two women’s organizations affiliated with Catholic
parishes in Larchmont, New York. Sister Kavanagh is a registered nurse who serves with the
Little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Service in East Harlem,
New York, where she serves patients of all ages who live in poverty.

In
order to better reflect the mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart,
particularly the principles set forth in the documents of Chapter 2000,
and the realities of today’s world as viewed in the aftermath of
September 11, 2001, the Sacred Heart Commission on Goals spent a year
giving new expression to the 1990 version of the Goals and Criteria for Sacred Heart Schools in the United States.

Jean Bartunek, RSCJ, was installed October 3 as Robert A. and Evelyn J.
Ferris Chair at Boston College, where she is professor of organization
studies. Sister Bartunek is director of the doctoral program in
organization studies and a past president of the international Academy
of Management. She earned a bachelor's degree at Maryville College of
the Sacred Heart in St. Louis (now Maryville University), where she
presently serves as a member of the board.

Sister Kathleen Conan, provincial of the U.S. Province reports that
RSCJ living in areas affected by hurricane Katrina are safe. Most of
the sisters left New Orleans as the hurricane approached and are
staying with RSCJ communities in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Sister
Lorraine Landry remained with her family in New Orleans.

Kathleen Conan, RSCJ, was installed as provincial of the U .S. Province
of the Society of the Sacred Heart on Sunday, August 14, in a liturgy
at the Shrine of Saint Philippine Duchesne in St. Charles, Missouri.
Installed with her were the three other members of her new provincial
team, Sisters Anne Byrne, Maria Hernandez and Paula Toner.

Anne Montgomery, RSCJ, veteran anti-war activist, has maintained a
presence in Iraq, where she has assisted Iraqis seeking information
about family members who have been detained. Her activities as a member
of Christian Peacemaker Teams are described in an article in the August
8, 2005, edition of the New York Times.

The Catholic Press Association gave its top award for books on liturgy to Sister Mary McGann’s new book, Precious Fountain. In addition, judges in the national competition gave two awards and two honorable mentions to Heart magazine, published by the Society of the Sacred Heart, U.S. Province, since 2003.

Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, was one of four featured speakers at the 2005
conference of Sacred Heart Communities in Collaboration, an
organization of religious communities of men and women who share a
common spirituality of dedication to the Sacred Heart. The conference
was held in Waltham, Massachusetts, June 24-26. Sister Osiek is Charles
Fischer Cathoilc Professor of New Testament at Brite Divinity School,
Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, and president of the Society of
Biblical Literature.

Kathleen Sullivan, RSCJ, was appointed Professor Emerita at Seattle
University, where she has taught math in the School of Engineering for
eighteen years. Sister Sullivan will continue teaching math at the
school. She will also pursue a variety of out-of-the-classroom teaching
experiences, including her annual summer “Splash” program for girls
from schools in the Seattle area who are top achievers in science and
math.

Sodality in San Francisco, recently conducted a survey of Adult
Children of Mary groups presently active in the United States. Mary

history of the sodality and the result of Sister Mardel’s survey.

Kathryn Sullivan, rscj, a Catholic biblical scholar who became a major
figure in the field before women were accepted for graduate Scripture
study, will celebrate her 100th
birthday on May 17 at Kenwood Convent of the Sacred Heart, Albany, N.Y.
Sister Sullivan, alumna and former Research Professor of Sacred
Scripture at Manhattanville, earned a Ph.D. in history from the
University of Pennsylvania in 1939 then later worked with a priest,
Msgr. John E. Steinmueller, who agreed to train her as a biblical
scholar.

The Religious of the Sacred Heart of the U.S. Province rejoice with the worldwide Catholic Church at the election of the 265th
pope on April 19, 2005, the second day of voting by the College of
Cardinals: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who has chosen the name Benedict
XVI. Cardinal Ratzinger has long served the church as priest, bishop
and cardinal and has generated controversy during his long tenure as
prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Buscher, rscj, professed her first vows in the Society of the Sacred
Heart during a ceremony March 28 in the chapel of Schools of the Sacred
Heart, Chicago. Barbara Bowe, RSCJ, professor at Chicago Theological
Union, delivered a reflection in a Mass celebrated by Fr. Gil Ostdiek,
OFM, and attended by Religious of the Sacred Heart from many parts of
the United States.

Buscher has completed her novitiate in the Society of the Sacred Heart
and will profess her first vows at a ceremony in Chicago on March 28.
Lisa, 36, is a native of Phoenix, Arizona. She holds a bachelor’s
degree from Grand Canyon University, where she majored in religion, and
a master’s degree in theology from Catholic Theological Union, Chicago.
