A recent article in Greenwich Time noted that New York Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka and his mother, Deodata Naalima, a native of Uganda, participated in Convent of the Sacred Heart's special Africa Day 2009. The article also noted that thousands of dollars have been raised by over twenty Sacred Heart schools over the years to help build Sacred Heart Primary School in Masaka, Uganda. In response to everyone’s concerns and in gratitude for your prayers
which we hope will continue, what follows is a short account on the
impact of Hurricane Gustav on the Schools of the Sacred Heart in rural
Grand Coteau, Louisiana. On September 1, 2008, Hurricane Gustav
descended upon Louisiana and left a trail of destruction across the
state. It left hundreds of thousands without power after it toppled
trees and knocked down power lines. While many breathed a sigh of
relief when Gustav was downgraded, the power of a Category 1 storm is
quite evident here on the grounds of Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau. We
are grateful for the safety of our families and many were anxious to
return after being out of class for one week.

Dear Heads of School and members of the Sacred Heart family, In the past two weeks we have all been keenly aware of and concerned
about the post-election situation in Kenya. Our province there, which
many of you know through the generous support you have given to help
build Sacred Primary School in Kyamusansala, Uganda, includes both
Uganda and Kenya. Sister Irene Cullen, our USA Mission Support
Coordinator for the Uganda-Kenya Province, and I thought that you would
want to know how the Kenya crisis is impacting the RSCJ there, their
educational mission and the people they serve.
