Sister
Kathleen Hughes has been named the recipient of the 2004 Frederick R.
McManus Award for her contributions to Catholic liturgy. The award,
which is given annually, will be presented October 15 in Orlando at the
annual meeting of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions.
Sister
Hughes is the ninth person, and the second woman, to receive the award,
which was established in 1995. Previous recipients have included Bishop
Donald Trautman of Erie, Pennsylvania; Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk of
Cincnnati, Ohio, and Godfrey Diekmann, O.S.B.
Sister
Hughes, provincial of the Society of the Sacred Heart, was formerly
professor of liturgy at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, where
she also served as vice president and academic dean. She is past
president of the North American Academy of Liturgy and has served on
the advisory committees of the Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy and
the International Commission on English in the Liturgy. She chaired
ICEL's committee on original texts and helped develop guidelines for
the composition of original texts.
Her publications include a biography of Godfrey Diekmann, The Monk's Tale.
She
holds a doctoral degree in theology and a master's in liturgical
studies from the University of Notre Dame and a master's in religion
education from Catholic University of America.
