Anyone
interested in meeting Haitian people and learning more about economic
development in Haiti is invited to join Sister Anita von Wellsheim.
RSCJ, in an eight-day Delegation to Haiti June 16-24.
The
trip will include a stop in Verrettes where three Religious of the
Sacred Heart, including Sister Judy Vollbrecht of the U.S. Province,
have established a ministry to youth.
The delegation,
titled “Building a Democratic Economy,” is sponsored by Fonkoze USA.
Sister von Wellsheim is coordinator in Albany, New York, for the
organization.
Fonkoze is an economic alliance of more than
1,900 peasant organizations, women’s collectives, cooperatives, credit
unions, street vendors and religious communities from all over Haiti.
The
itinerary for the first three days includes a “Stations of the Cross”
tour of Port-au-Prince to learn more about the Haitian people’s
struggle to establish democracy, a meeting with Fonkoze’s staff and a
tour of marketplaces.
Days four through eight will be
spent in the countryside meeting with Fonkoze staff and learning more
about economic development in rural areas. The delegation will meet “ti
machann,” women street vendors, who are the backbone of the Haitian
economy.
Cost of the trip is $700. The price does not include airfare to Port-au-Prince, but does cover all other basic costs.
