While
U.S. theater goers await Mel Gibson’s “The Passion,” a film about the
life of Jesus, another film about Jesus, “The Gospel of John,” is
making news in several U.S. cities.
Carolyn Osiek, rscj,
professor of New Testament at Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth,
Texas, is one of nine biblical scholars from the United States and
Canada who served on an advisory panel to the film’s producers.
More information about the film, articles, reviews and a list of cities and theaters where it is being shown is available at www.GospelofJohnthefilm.com.
Sister
Osiek, formerly a professor at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago,
is also serving as an advisor on a sequel, The Gospel of Mark. The
group behind the film, the Toronto-based Visual Bible International,
Inc., aspires to put the entire Bible on film, book by book.
The
Gospel of John, a word-for-word portrayal, was filmed in Spain and
Toronto with 75 British and Canadian actors and some 2000 extras. An
article in The Christian Century, October 4, describes the film as
“visually stunning.”
