The Mystery of the Little Round House

Julie Siderfin, Sacred Heart associate and archivist at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, St. Charles, Missouri, and Cleta Flynn, St. Charles County Historical Society member have been working together on academy history. At Julie’s suggestion Mrs. Flynn wrote an article for St. Charles County Heritage, bulletin of the historical society, about the small octagonal chapel on the grounds of the academy that housed Philippine Duchesne’s remains for almost 100 years. Julie delved into her records to supply the information and Mrs. Flynn did the same.

What they found created rather than solved a mystery.

From Kenwood to Teresian House - RSCJ adjusting well

As of mid-May, five RSCJ had formed a community at Teresian House, a skilled care facility in Albany, New York, operated by the Carmelite Sisters of the Aged and Infirm. Although Teresian House is a large facility – 300 residents – it is divided into "neighborhoods" of fifteen to twenty residents, each with its own living and kitchen/dining area. Daily activities take place in these areas. They are comfortably furnished in various styles to simulate home environments. Each resident has a private room and bath. A large, bright chapel is situated on the first floor.

As the Society grew rapidly with new houses and new members, it was necessary to establish it on a legal footing with both canon and civil law. In 1806 the long process narrated by Jeanne de Charry began.[i] The council that met at Amiens in 1806 not only elected Madeleine Sophie superior general but also drew up the earliest set of rules.

Elizabeth White, RSCJ, to get honorary degree

Elizabeth White, RSCJ, will receive an honorary degree from Boston College on May 22 in recognition of her lifelong commitment as a Religious of the Sacred Heart to the ministry of teaching. Sister White, a specialist in English literature, has spent more than five decades in higher education at Newton College of the Sacred Heart in Boston and at Boston College. She holds a doctoral degree from Catholic University in Washington D.C.

Sister Hughes Praises New Encyclical

Sister Padberg, music therapist, honored

0602padberg_thHarriet Padberg, RSCJ, of St. Louis was honored in late January for her work as a music therapist at Emmaus Home for developmentally disabled adults. She was among three women presented with the Epsilon Sigma Alpha’s DIANA Award (Distinguished International Academy of Noble Achievement).

200 years ago in the Society: Eden

No sooner had Madeleine Sophie been elected to preside over the infant Society than she received two invitations to further expansion. One came from Poitiers, where the three Chobelet sisters and some others who aspired to religious life were operating a small school in an abandoned Cistercian monastery that they had bought. Through priest friends who traveled about giving missions, these women heard of Madeleine Sophie and the nascent Society.
