Philippine in Bronze - Again

Duchesne statueThe City of St. Charles, Missouri, has chosen a sculptor to make a bronze statue of pioneer educator St. Rose Philippine Duchesne as part of its series of statues of historic figures. The statue will be one and a half times life size and be placed on the grounds of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles.

RSCJ-Scientist Inducted Into Hall of Fame

Pat Shaffer Patricia Shaffer, RSCJ, was inducted into the San Diego County Women's Hall of Fame on March 24, 2007, as an "Improver of Women's Lives." She was cited as "a research chemist, university professor, nun, and member of the scientific associations who since the 1950s has encouraged children to study science. From the classroom to Tijunana orphanages to migrant worker children, her contributions are legendary."

The long life of Mother Jane Fox extended from the last days of St. Madeleine Sophie to the end of World War II. The field of her activity linked the Mississippi Valley to the Pacific Ocean. Her vigorous and enthusiastic personality developed from a literal sense of duty to generous self-giving.

Verona Denkmann, rscjThe next stage of the U.S. Province’s elder care plan began March 8 with the move of Verona Denkmann, RSCJ, from Oakwood Convent of the Sacred Heart, Atherton, California, to Our Lady of Fatima Villa, a skilled care facility in Saratoga, about twenty miles to the southeast.

Annette Schmeling, RSCJAnnette Schmeling, RSCJ, has been appointed vice president for student development at the University of Dayton. Described in a University of Dayton news release as “an innovative leader,” Sister Schmeling has served in a variety of positions in higher education, including associate vice president for student learning at Creighton University in Omaha since 2004. Kathleen Sullivan, RSCJKathleen Sullivan, RSCJ, of Seattle received a “Champion of Catholic Education” award from the Archdiocese of Western Washington on February 2. Sister Sullivan, Seattle University professor emerita, was honored for decades of teaching mathematics to children, adolescents and young adults in every year of grade school, high school, college and graduate school.
