One hundred years ago: the Society of the Sacred Heart goes to Asia

The Annual Letters, Third Part, 1906-1907-1908 carried the following account, the first from the new foundation in Tokyo: "It was at the dawn of this year, 1908, a special year for us all because of the glorification of our blessed Founder [Madeleine Sophie Barat was beatified in 1908.] that Japan was finally opened to the ardent zeal and desires of the spouses of the Sacred Heart. On January 1, the Nikko Maru cast anchor in the harbor of Yokohama, and the same day Reverend Mother Salmon [vicar of Australia], accompanied by the founders arrived in Tokyo…."

Society gives painting of Mater to Teresian House

On Friday, October 12, most of the 25 Religious of the Sacred Heart living at Teresian House gathered for a special event with eight of the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm, who operate the facility. The occasion? A blessing of a painting of Mater Admirabilis, given to Teresian House by the Society of the Sacred Heart.

Helen Rosenthal, RSCJ, is one of a few Catholic sisters who have developed a blog – a nickname for a web log – a regularly updated journal or newsletter posted on the Internet. Daily since mid-February, Sister Rosenthal has posted spiritual reflections and insights tied to the liturgical calendar, as well as information about new spiritual reading, and prayer resources for readers around the world.

The story of the two Jouve sisters takes us back to Philippine's monastery in Grenoble, Ste Marie d'En Haut. When Philippine met Madeleine Sophie and joined the Society of the Sacred Heart, she handed over Ste Marie with its boarding school to the Society. Soon Philippine's sister Charlotte Euphrosine Jouve sent her daughters there to be educated by their aunt and her new community.

RSCJ, former RSCJ, reunite to share life stories

Reunion Ten members of a group of forty-nine women who first came together to profess vows in the Society of the Sacred Heart in Rome gathered in St. Charles, Missouri, on July 30 for a 40th anniversary celebration. Participants – including RSCJ and four former RSCJ - came from Italy, Spain and Mexico as well from across the United States.

0707_assemblych_th.jpgMany of you have promised your support and prayer for the Provincial Assembly/ Chapter held in Chicago at the beginning of July. We are very grateful and have truly experienced the fruit of everyone’s prayer. Two hundred thirty RSCJs were gathered at Loyola University; we were able to “web- cast” live the general sessions to Kenwood and Oakwood where our sisters spent hours “with us” via this transmission on a big screen!

New vocation materials published

The Vocation Ministry Committee of the U.S. Province has published new vocation materials: "rack cards" - printed cards about the size of a large post card - in four styles, designed to appeal to different age groups and graphic preferences.
