Maureen Glavin, rscj, has been appointed head of school at Academy of the Sacred Heart, St. Charles, Mo. She will succeed Margaret Caire, rscj, who is retiring. Sister Caire has been head of school in St. Charles for twenty years.

A
town meeting on homeland security, held at St. Louis University last
fall, featured Tom Ridge, U.S. Secretary for Homeland Security, the
Mayor of St. Louis and four or five other officials responsible for
implementing national security measures at the city, county and state
levels. The stated purpose of the town meeting was to give citizens a
voice about their particular concerns regarding threats of terrorism.

2, 2003 was bitterly cold in Cambridge, Massachusetts. That didn’t
deter a crowd of people, including Mayor Michael A. Sullivan and State
Representative Alice Wolfe, from coming out for the opening of the
McKay House at 265 Rindge Avenue.

Shirley Miller, rscj, headmistress of Sacred Heart schools for 25 years
in Omaha, Neb., and New Orleans, La., has been appointed director of
mission advancement for the United States Province of her religious
order, the Society of the Sacred Heart.

1 is the day dedicated by the Church to celebrate Mary, Mother of God.
It is also World Day of Prayer for Peace. The more I pondered these two
realities during the Christmas season, the more I saw their connection.
Mary, woman, mother, and Christ-bearer, brought to the world the Prince
of Peace. Through her willingness to be a bearer of life, we have
received hope and the promise of new life.

Sister
Carolyn Osiek, rscj, professor of New Testament at Brite Divinity
School in Fort Worth, Texas, is the new vice-president, president-elect
of the Society of Biblical Literature. She is only the fourth woman,
and the eighth Catholic, to be elected to that post in the 123-year
history of the international scholarly organization.

Last
year during Advent, I took advantage of a free twenty-four hours at a
place of solitude in rural Missouri. A group of privately vowed women
who had been given the gift of farm land opened three hermitages on the
property and offered “free solitude times” to get themselves and their
magnificent spot known. I shall never forget the sense of peace and
utter wholeness as I sat in the small hermitage and looked out over the
rolling hills parched by late fall, early winter frost.
