“Sometimes
it happens that Divine Providence is revealed in apparently
insignificant circumstances to which faith attributes a sign of the
love of the One to whom everything is present…” Thus some of our
sisters explained finding a stone engraved with a pierced heart
surmounted by a cross and the date 1654. They were inspecting a
property they were thinking of buying; the heart and cross was the sign
that they should proceed. It was 1903 on the island of Malta.

An
article by Sister Jane O’Shaughnessy, RSCJ, about the Catholic church
in China appears in the September, 2004, issue of St. Anthony
Messenger. Sister O’Shaughnessy was a Sacred Heart Associate when she
made her first visit to Taiwan in 1998, living in community with
Religious of the Sacred Heart and immersing her self in Chinese
culture.

Seven
Religious of the Sacred Heart participated in an effort by members of
Catholic religious orders in Uganda to persuade that country’s
government to act swiftly to end an 18-year war against rebels in the
north and alleviate the suffering of some 1.6 million people who have
been uprooted from their homes in the conflict.

I had a surprising reaction to the news that the Diocese of Portland, Oregon, was filing for bankruptcy.
“If
we have to sell parish churches, this may be the end of the Church as
we know it,” said one Portland Catholic interviewed on the news.
At
first I felt shock and sadness at the loss faithful Catholics in
Portland must be experiencing. In the worst case scenario suggested by
news reports such as this, the Church as we have known it will pass
away.

Yes,
the year is 1904, the land is Egypt and according to the Annual
Letters, “a happy band of RSCJ has found shelter here in a country
whose interest lies in its biblical and historical connections,
especially its place in the life of the Holy Family.” Both Malta and
Egypt, where RSCJ established foundations in the same year, owe their
existence to the departure from France of so many religious whose
houses had had to close by virtue of the Laws of Association
legislation that forbade religious to teach and allowed the French
government to seize their properties.

Not long ago I attended a social work conference on transitions and
was interested to note that the speaker returned repeatedly to one
central concept: Networking as a way to move into the future. Later, I
was at a RSCJ meeting and someone passed along an article on networking
from a book by Diarmiud O’Murchu, a priest and social psychologist
living in London. I had previously read his book Quantum Theology as
part of a reflection group with RSCJ, colleagues and friends in the
Miami Area. He has written other books including Poverty, Celibacy and
Obedience: A Radical Option for life and Our World in Transition. Now,
O’Murchu has a new book that many of our sisters are reading called:
Evolutional Faith: Rediscovering God in our Great Story.
