Carolyn Osiek featured at conference

Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, was one of four featured speakers at the 2005 conference of Sacred Heart Communities in Collaboration, an organization of religious communities of men and women who share a common spirituality of dedication to the Sacred Heart. The conference was held in Waltham, Massachusetts, June 24-26. Sister Osiek is Charles Fischer Cathoilc Professor of New Testament at Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, and president of the Society of Biblical Literature.
 
Kathleen Sullivan, RSCJ, appointed Professor Emerita

0506_emerita_thKathleen Sullivan, RSCJ, was appointed Professor Emerita at Seattle University, where she has taught math in the School of Engineering for eighteen years. Sister Sullivan will continue teaching math at the school. She will also pursue a variety of out-of-the-classroom teaching experiences, including her annual summer “Splash” program for girls from schools in the Seattle area who are top achievers in science and math.

Network employees attend conferences

0506_network1_thVeteran educators and new employees of the twenty-one Sacred Heart schools in the United States gathered over the weekend of June 24 for conferences at Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles. The conferences were sponsored by the Network of Sacred Heart Schools.

Mary Mardel, RSCJ, a longtime moderator of the Adult Children of Mary Sodality in San Francisco, recently conducted a survey of Adult Children of Mary groups presently active in the United States. Mary Blish, RSCJ, of New Orleans, has written an article giving a brief history of the sodality and the result of Sister Mardel’s survey.

Whose feast is this anyway?
“Moses said to the people:  ‘You are a people sacred to the Lord, your God…’”  Those are the opening words of today’s first reading and I was immediately captivated by them.  On this feast of the sacred heart, the readings have Moses announce to the assembly that it is they who are sacred.  It made me ask the question:  whose feast is this anyway?   If we are sacred to the Lord our God then so are our hearts “sacred hearts.”  It was an amazing thought to me and remains so.

sullivan_thKathryn Sullivan, rscj, a Catholic biblical scholar who became a major figure in the field before women were accepted for graduate Scripture study, will celebrate her 100th birthday on May 17 at Kenwood Convent of the Sacred Heart, Albany, N.Y. Sister Sullivan, alumna and former Research Professor of Sacred Scripture at Manhattanville, earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939 then later worked with a priest, Msgr. John E. Steinmueller, who agreed to train her as a biblical scholar.
