Chapter 2008
August 18 – Week 6
General Chapter 2008: The Conclusion of the Chapter
In this the final few days of the Chapter, the delegates have been meeting in "Centers of Interest," working groups, refining the earlier work of the chapter on contemplation, community, youth, dialogue/communication and justice, peace, integrity of creation. Kathleen Conan, RSCJ wrote to the US Province this past weekend telling us, "There is good energy in the group and a real desire to offer the Society some directions in these areas that we can all deepen in our own contexts."
Also in her letter Kathy spoke about the report of Cecile Meijer, RSCJ (the UN representative) to the chapter delegates about the RSCJ involvement at the United Nations. Cecile had recommended that the Society continue with our status at the United Nations through the Department of Public Information (DPI) and that we apply for consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This latter status would give us the ability to influence the work of the various committees involved in economic and social development issues. The General Council in their report to the Society had also made this proposal… On August 6th, we rejoiced with Cecile as the chapter approved this recommendation.
There are many commentaries, photos, a blog and video clips available on the RSCJ International website. We encourage you to continue to go to that site in the days and weeks ahead as the chapter mandates are finalized and preparation is made to take back the outcomes of the chapter to the many cultures and contexts in which we minister around the world.
Also we ask your prayers for the delegates and for the new congregational leaders, as they conclude their work in Lima on August 20th and are sent back to the 44 countries of the world to begin the implementation of the calls and decisions of General Chapter 2008.
