Even
in the lifetime of Saint Madeleine Sophie, there were appeals from
Brazil for a Sacred Heart school. Mother du Rousier was charged at
first with exploring this foundation, but in the end she went to Chile
instead. Years later on the occasion of the dispersion of the French
religious, Mother Digby inquired of the bishop of Rio de Janeiro if the
Society was still wanted. His enthusiastic response was echoed by
former students of French and English houses who - so the Annual
Letters tell us - were thrilled [tressaillaient de joie] at the thought
of seeing their mothers of the Sacred Heart in their country.

“Sometimes
it happens that Divine Providence is revealed in apparently
insignificant circumstances to which faith attributes a sign of the
love of the One to whom everything is present…” Thus some of our
sisters explained finding a stone engraved with a pierced heart
surmounted by a cross and the date 1654. They were inspecting a
property they were thinking of buying; the heart and cross was the sign
that they should proceed. It was 1903 on the island of Malta.

Yes,
the year is 1904, the land is Egypt and according to the Annual
Letters, “a happy band of RSCJ has found shelter here in a country
whose interest lies in its biblical and historical connections,
especially its place in the life of the Holy Family.” Both Malta and
Egypt, where RSCJ established foundations in the same year, owe their
existence to the departure from France of so many religious whose
houses had had to close by virtue of the Laws of Association
legislation that forbade religious to teach and allowed the French
government to seize their properties.
