As a student at Convent High School, Barbara Dawson'66, RSCJ, remembers walking into single-room occupancy buildings in San Francisco's Mission District to deliver food to the hungry. That served as a foundation, she says, for a life dedicated to advocating for the poor and marginalized.
On the Feast of Mater Admirabilis, Sister Barbara Dawson blessed Sister Sheila Hammond as new Provincial and the Provincial Team members of Sister Meg Causey, Sister Anne-Marie Conna and Sister Diana Wall for the United States - Canada (USC) Province. Following a consultation with the Religious of the Sacred Heart across the United States and Canada, Sheila Hammond, RSCJ, took the office as Provincial October 20, 2016, with Sister Causey, Sister Conn and Sister Wall continuing in their leadership roles on the Provincial Team.
Janet Stuart urges us to “enter into the joy of Our Lady.” She wrote often about joy: Be a Joybearer, a joygiver. “Joy is the infallible sign of God.” Entering into Mary’s joy, we also enter into our hope. Mary leads us not only to heavenly joys but also to joys in the here and now.
The image of Mater, whether the painting or the statue, perfectly depicts her joy. My experience tells me that what Mary does best is to lead me to Her Son. She takes seriously Jesus’ words, “I shall see you again and your hearts will be full of joy, a joy no one shall take from you.” (Jn. 16:32)
Jasmine Harris Smith, an alumna of Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Miami, Florida, almost lost her chance to attend Loyola University New Orleans. When parents of her classmates at Carrollton heard her story, one of the moms set up a YouCaring.com crowdfunding page. Within 24 hours, the page had more than 2,300 shares and raised $41,741 to cover four years’ college tuition for Jasmine. What a example of the power and support of the Sacred Heart family!
The Provincial Team invites you to join us and several religious congregations in praying quite intentionally for the elections. The attached prayer was created by the Adrian Dominican sisters and we have adapted it slightly. The team will pray this prayer at noon (wherever we are) every Tuesday from now through the elections and we hope you will pray with us.
The Vocation Team held its first Facebook Live Event. The theme was selected by polling the Vocation Facebook audience about what they would like to discuss. Their choice, what it means to be a Fun Nun. Click on this link to see the discussion.
Pope Francis has requested that September 1, 2016 be a World Day of Prayer for Care of Creation. The day of prayer, the pope said, will give individuals and communities an opportunity to implore God's help in protecting creation and an opportunity to ask God's forgiveness "for sins committed against the world in which we live." Read about the full announcement here.
Sister JoEllen Sumpter and Sister Lucy Hayes have retired from Duchesne Academy in Omaha. A beautiful article that discusses the transition in Omaha and their legacy is attached. To read the story click here.
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
More “wrong coming up to face us everywhere…”
Convent & Stuart Hall is pleased to introduce you to the school's new website, the product of two years of strategic design. One of the core pillars of our strategic plan centered on enriching communications and included a mandate to "increase the standard of communication" with our extended community of students, alumni, parents, trustees and friends of the Sacred Heart family. The new website was designed to be an engaging and representative deliverable in service of this charge.
After countless hours of research, analysis, training and exploration, the new site is live.
