A first report was received February 27 from Kim King, RSCJ, a member of the US Province, who is serving in the northern sector of Valparaiso, in Via del Mar, Chiles fourth largest city. Five other Religious of the Sacred Heart are in community there, working in a Sacred Heart school and youth ministry. Sister King described the earthquake experience as "wild" and said physical damage was minimal there - but that prayers are needed for all those missing

Dear Sacred Heart Students and Supporters, In 2002 when the first building of our primary school started to take
shape there were some inquisitive village children visiting the site
each day fascinated by what was happening. Imagine now with 441 sets
of eyes checking on the daily progress of the construction activity for
the classroom block. By the Feast of Mater, thanks to the generosity of
our faithful friends, we were a good way along towards our $500,000
construction goal. So it was thought best to break ground and begin
construction and go as far as possible with the funds on hand- for the
longer we wait the more expensive the project will be. Hopefully by
February 2010 there will be an academic block for the fourteen
classrooms and a much less congested dormitory area. The excitement and
joy at our school would surely warm your good hearts.

They began arriving in a steady stream on June 19th.
They came to “risk something different and discover the loving face of
Christ”…they came “with a small vision of the world, yet knowing a
bigger world was out there”…they came “tired of the routine of
life”…they came “to help and to serve others”….they came because they
wanted to “change the world”!
