We invite all to enter more deeply into the calls of Chapter 2008
during Advent. In support of this invitation, an Advent Reflection
will be posted on the RSCJ website for each week of Advent. These
reflections will be prepared by members of the province who have been
asked to offer their own insights into Advent and the calls of the
Chapter 2008.

This year at Saint Louis
University Hospital we have an Episcopal priest from Nigeria as a Clinical
Pastoral Education student. He has been in this country for about seven
years, and only recently came to St. Louis to do his clinical work.
His wife and three children remain in Hannibal, MO, where he returns
each weekend to them and to duties in the church where he
continues to be pastor. We’ll call him Nelson.

Take time to work, it is the price of success.
Take time to think, it is the source of power.
Take time to play, it is the secret of perpetual youth.
Take time to read, it is the foundation of wisdom...

Has it struck you, as it did me, how tenderly the gospel speaks of the relationship between Abraham and Dives?
Here Dives is suffering the torments of hell
and he still calls Abraham, "my father," and Abraham in turn calls Dives, "my child."
There's no getting around it, is there? It's all about relationships.

Spirit of Wisdom, bless us with greater knowledge of and compassion for Mother Earth.
Fill us with love for all her sentient beings, the holy ground on which we step, the life-giving air we breathe, the healing water to be shared among plants and creatures alike, and the finite resources that are gifts never to be taken for granted.

For forty days each year, Christians observe a sacred time of fasting
and prayer called Lent. They do so in order to acknowledge the presence
of God within all creation and their common call to continue to create
a world of mercy, justice and sustainability. Muslims observe a similar
period known as Ramadan. Jews do so during Rosh Hashanah.

I think that perhaps the greatest pruning is the wounding of
our own hearts, allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, open to being
wounded. During my own probation I had an insight that as
Religious of the Sacred Heart, our greatest suffering is the suffering
of the heart…and we have all known it in greater or lesser degrees

Mary did you know that your baby boy would some day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you...

Either
we have hope within us or we don't. It is a dimension of the soul and
it is not essentially dependent on some particular observation of the
world. It is an orientation of the spirit, an orientation of the heart.
It transcends the world that is immediately experienced and is anchored
somewhere beyond its horizon.

God of Compassion, We pray for all those whose lives have been changed forever by Hurricane Katrina.
For the broken mother in New Orleans who had to choose which members of
her family could go into a small rescue boat and who had to be left
behind on a rooftop; And for all the mothers in the devastated areas whose hearts are broken by their families sufferings,
Have Mercy, O Holy One.

Holy and Loving God, we ask for your forgiveness for the sins committed in our name:
for our brothers and sisters around the world who suffer because of our prosperity;
for the children who hunger and thirst for a chance at life;
for the violence we see and hear everyday in our streets, our homes, and our words;

world has been growing, bringing us hope for a more peaceful, just and

A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone
in a stream. The next day, she met another traveler who was hungry, and
the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler
saw the precious stone in the wise woman’s bag, admired it, and asked
the woman to give it to him. The wise woman did so without hesitation.
