They began arriving in a steady stream on June 19th.
They came to “risk something different and discover the loving face of
Christ”…they came “with a small vision of the world, yet knowing a
bigger world was out there”…they came “tired of the routine of
life”…they came “to help and to serve others”….they came because they
wanted to “change the world”!

Madeleine Sophie's home in Joigny was warmly decked with boughs of
holly - and with the warmth of the community of Rue Davier. The doors
opened wide over the weekend to welcome guests who arrived from several
corners of France and beyond in order to celebrate the 10th birthday of
the Centre Sophie Barat as a space of prayer and reflection. And of
course, Sophie's presence and special welcome for each one were
especially tangible on this occasion.

Coming
to Washington in order to work on the international website is indeed a
time for “mind-stretching”. Yesterday this “stretching” took the shape
of an opportunity to put my body where my heart is: with refugees and
displaced, especially those in the African continent.

...The visit to Chad meant wearing yet another hat,
the hat of someone who comes for the first time and who meets new
persons, new scenes, new situations. I was very happy that Asunta, the
regional superior for Chad, made her way into the arrival area and
shepherded me through immigration and customs.

This is what the experience of three weeks in Korea has meant to me. It
was a moment to take off my shoes, to enter into the Korean way of
being at home, in slippers, leaving the “outside” shoes in a cupboard
in the hall.

Storyline
One of the hardest things about our busy lifestyles is being present to those around us. One reason I’ve taken the pilgrimage to Guatemala the last two years is because as a pilgrim I am able to be present to where I am and I am open to being transformed. In this way being a pilgrim feels like meditation to me. It helps me see God in other people and it helps me see the barriers in my own heart. This leads to compassion and concern for the people of Guatemala rather than complete despair. And it is easy for me to despair.
