In the early 1970’s, the Society of the Sacred Heart sold its large
Motherhouse in Rome, in favor of moving to smaller and simpler
quarters. Excess funds from the sale of the property were designated
for the most poor and marginalized people in countries where we serve.
The commitment to share in this way became known as “The Solidarity
Fund”, and continues as such to this day.
Each
year RSCJ, and only RSCJ, recommend poverty-based projects in their
region for funding consideration. Included are works by and for those
who have been impoverished and marginalized all over the world – and
who lack adequate assistance from other organizations. The Society puts
strong emphasis on building the capacity of recipients to become
independent in their efforts.
We share here the list of
this year’s Solidarity Fund projects, noting (and sometimes picturing)
the work and mission of the Fund for the coming year as well as the
past year. We count on God’s blessing for the continuation of the work
so well begun, by so many people.

“EDUCON” (EDUcateurs CONsultants) is a program whose purpose is to
support children with their schooling and prevent the phenomenon of
street children. The Fund gave €16.995 for the 5 parts of the program:
1) A “foster parent” program for 275 children from a poor area of the
commune of Mont Ngafula. EDUCON paid $5 per trimester for each child,
yet by the end of the trimester costs had risen to $10.00 per child.
This was difficult for the “foster parents” and the grant made it
possible to cover the extra costs. 2) A program for improving home life
for children by working with groups of parents in areas such as
parenting skills. 3) The “special school” was created to provide a
second chance to those children who had left school. This school has a
principal, 3 teachers and one administrator. 4) A school infirmary
which makes it possible to administer first aid to the students in
emergency situations. A microscope, medications and laboratory
equipment were purchased. 5) Renewal courses for teachers: 36 teachers
who are in charge of a total of 1,700 participated and learned how to
evaluate their teaching methods. This also gave them a chance to share
