Linda Haydock, SNJM PDF Print E-mail
lindaIn the twenty five years since she graduated from Forest Ridge, Linda Haydock, SNJM, has worked unceasingly for Social Justice. In her days as a Campus minister at Holy Names Academy, Linda travelled with her students to El Salvador and Kenya where she challenged them to a rigorous and unsentimental analysis of the inequities they were seeing. Now, as Director of the Intercommunity Peace and Justice Center in Seattle, WA., she has expanded the scope of her teaching mission.

The IPJC (as the Center is called) is sponsored by eight religious congregations ministering in the Northwest, including the Religious of the Sacred Heart. The mission of the center is to promote just structures and systemic change, with a special emphasis on the economic injustices that affect women and children . While the Center does offer consciousness raising programs for Teen Agers, (such as the Seattle Urban Plunge program), it is also initiated a very successful spirituality and empowerment program for adult women called WEAVERS: Women's Experience and Voice Expressed in Ritual and Story. Now in its fifth year, WEAVERS has involved over 2500 women at 50 sites and led to the creation of a book of women's rituals and a companion tape, called We are Sisters. In addition, the center publishes a journal A Matter of Spirit which provided theological reflection, social analysis and tools for practical action on justice issues.

"Who I am is, in large measure, a result of RSCJ influence," Linda says, "With a Sacred Heart education comes the gift of being part of a world©wide family. I ask myself "How can I best use this gift for the sake of the poor in our world?" Storyline

JeannineOne of the hardest things about our busy lifestyles is being present to those around us. One reason I’ve taken the pilgrimage to Guatemala the last two years is because as a pilgrim I am able to be present to where I am and I am open to being transformed. In this way being a pilgrim feels like meditation to me. It helps me see God in other people and it helps me see the barriers in my own heart. This leads to compassion and concern for the people of Guatemala rather than complete despair. And it is easy for me to despair.
