Nature of the Collaboration
The
Barnyard Community Center is a partner in collaborative efforts with
other agencies to provide comprehensive services to at-risk children
and their families in the West Grove. These linkages facilitate quick
and accurate referrals, promote collaborative programming, build
interagency trust and cooperation, and increase the efficiency with
which scarce resources are distributed. These include:
- Coconut Grove Family and Youth Intervention Center - (Family Empowerment Project serving juvenile offenders and their families)
- Informed Families - (parent training and drug prevention)
- United Way of Dade County
- One on One Mentoring Program Network
- YMCA of Greater Miami - (cooperative programming and cultural exchange)
- Children's Psychiatric Center - (staff and volunteer training, parenting, and staff workshops)
- Celebrating Diversity Everywhere - (youth group from diverse neighborhoods)
In
addition, The Barnyard is a project partner with CEDC (Center for
Educational Design and Communication in Washington DC,) and a placement
for students doing service for Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart,
Palmer Trinity High School, and Belen Jesuit High School. The Network
of Sacred Heart Schools' Summer Program has used The Barnyard for
service placement for several summers. There are many additional
volunteers from the surrounding community who assist the work of The
Barnyard including several businesses who are in partnership with our
program.
Tutors from Miami Dade Community College and the
University of Miami teach reading every week-day afternoon under the
America Reads Program, a work-study program of their respective
institutions.
Purpose and Activities
The
Barnyard Community Center in Coconut Grove, Florida (Miami) serves
inner city African American families in the West Grove through an After
School Program; a Summer Camp; Court Diversionary Program for Juvenile
Offenders; Parenting Workshops, Life Skills Programs; Computer Lab and
other programs.
The social problems of the West Grove and
of Miami itself are grave. Only if neighborhood children are taught,
strengthened, and given a new vision of their future and their
community's future can real social problems begin to be solved. The
Barnyard is dedicated to this endeavor.
